Burundi: UN Security Council Extends Binub's Mandate for One Year

20 December 2007

Bujumbura — The United Nations Security Council extended the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Bureau to Burundi. The mandate was due to expire with the end of the year 2007, but has been extended in a bid to allow this organisation to foster conditions for the return of the PALIPEHUTU-FNL to the Joint Verification and Monitoring Mechanism.

The mission of BINUB is to achieve peace after more than 13 years of open civil war have torn apart Burundi, a tiny country located in the heart of Africa. The delay in the implementation of the peace deal that was struck on 7 September 2006 has given rise to worries that civil war might break out again.

Recently, the Regional Initiative for Peace in Burundi, the United Nations, the African Union, and the Facilitation team decided that they will work with determination toward fostering a favourable environment to allow PALIPEHUTU-FNL to return to the Joint Verification and Monitoring Mechanism. Their statement softened the previous decisions that punitive actions against PALIPEHUTU-FNL would be taken if leaders of this movement fail to return to The Joint Verification and Monitoring Mechanism before the end of this year.

Burundi's Parliament decided that it will facilitate talks between PALIPEHUTU-FNL and the government of Burundi. This move has been greeted with satisfaction by leaders of PALIPEHUTU-FNL.
