Burundi: Many Students of the University of Burundi Take Registration

21 December 2007

Bujumbura — Students of the University Burundi have given way in their struggle to have reinstated the leaders of their student association who were dismissed on 8 December 2007 by a decision of the government. Students gathered today in their facilities to take registration.

The authorities of the university say that this massive registration follows the call made by the chancellor of the University, Gaston Hakiza.

Students, on the other hand, say that their registration is the result of the call made by the leader of the dismissed students association.

Students were arrested in the capital city on the grounds that they had leaflets issued by an association that has been labelled as illegal.

The University of Burundi has now set new rules for students. They are no longer allowed to stage any strike for any reason whatsoever.
