Gombe — As part of efforts to ensure that only regulated products are in circulation in the country, contraband products worth N50 million will be destroyed by the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), in Gombe State.
Mr Abdulsalam Ozigis, Gombe State Coordinator of the Agency, said the products included fake and expired drugs, food and cosmetics, warning that the Agency would not hesitate to close down any premises found selling fake drugs and other substandard products, as well as prosecute such dealers.
Ozigis said the products were seized by the Agency, while others were voluntarily surrendered by the traders.
On bakeries, Ozigis said the Agency took samples of bread baked in the state for laboratory testing in Maiduguri, noting that result of the 20 samples of bread tested in the laboratory indicated that it was safe for consumption.
He also said survey conducted by the Agency indicated that salt consumed in the state were adequately iodised, while there was no 'Vitamin A" donor drug in illegal outlets, as health workers in the state now have better orientation.
He expressed satisfaction with how "pure water" producers are now complying with NAFDAC's directive of including date mark on their labels, but warned bakers to ensure that their products bear labels bearing all necessary information regarding their business addresses and content of their products or face severe sanctions.
He said "NAFDAC will no longer tolerate bakers who do not give full address of their bakery, ingredients their products are made of, weight of the product and baking date," and stressed the need for bakers to ensure that their products were free of bromate, because of the danger it poses to consumers' health.
