Lagos — OVER N20 billion has been spent by the Ondo State government on road constructions in the state in the last four years.

The Commissioner for Works and Transport, Mr. Olaitan Ayeni said over the weekend that part of the money was spent in conjunction with the local governments in the state.Ayeni pointed out that the money was spent on construction and rehabilitation of 919 kilometers of roads across the 18 local government areas of the state.

The roads according to him include the Owo-Ikare-Ajowa road and Ore-Okitipupa roads that are federal roads on which the state spent over N1.5 billion.

The commissioner, however, said over one year after spending the money on the roads, the federal government had only refunded only N700 million.

Speaking on the deplorable condition of the Owo-Ikare road barely one year after it was rehabilitated; he said the state had concluded plans to block the road to heavy trucks, saying that the trucks were responsible for the situation.

According to him, many of the vehicles that were supposed to be passing the Owo-Ipele-Ido-Ani route to Abuja were using the Owo-Ikare road even during the rehabilitation period.
