Addis Ababa

Ayele Chamiso, another claimant to the CUD leadership, chastised leaders of the former CUD party who have been locked in a power struggle for sometime for abandoning the cause in which party supporters lost their lives and going after their personal gains.

Ayele Chamiso has been in conflict with Temesgen Zewdie, a parliamentarian and leader of the CUD party.

Now Ayele is claiming that be is the rightful leader of the party as he holds the certificate of recognition from the electoral board.

He stressed that only the CUD led by him can use the party name and no one also can suspend members without his knowledge, referring to last week's incident in which former leader of CUD Hailu Shawel suspended five members of the executive committee.

Ayele called for reconciliation among all members of CUD in order to avert danger and maintain the existence of the party.

In a press briefing on Monday, he said he was saddened by the factionalism that surfaced within the party following the release of former party leaders from prison.

The statement released during the press briefing says that the emergence of two factions led by former chairman Hailu Shawel and Dr. Berhanu Nega former mayor-elect of Addis Ababa after their release from prison was a heart-breaking experience.

Ayele called upon the two sides to compromise and reach agreement. Moreover, he called on them to exert maximum effort to secure the release of other CUD members who are still in prison, and ensure the party's existence in the future.

Ayele pointed out that the difference amongst party members residing in Ethiopia is narrow compared to the one in the diaspora and called upon elders and intellectuals to contribute their share towards solving the current division.
