The Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce and Sectorial Association is looking forward to solicit 18 million birr fund from donors to build the capacity of regional chamber of commerce and sectoral associations, Yosief Tesfaye, General Secretary of the Chamber told The Reporter.

Established within the last three years following the relevant proclamation issued in 2003, most of the regional chamber of commerce and sectorial associations are not fully operational to date, according to Yoseif.

"Due to lack of basic resources, most of these associations are not in a position to be fully active and render service. We are already working with donor groups assisting private sector development initiatives to solicit capacity building support to these institutions," the manager said.

According to Yosief, the donors were already informed about the kind of support required to capacitate the regional associations, which include an 18 million birr package to organize and capacitate the office, human resource and institutional capacity of these associations.

Following the promulgation of the proclamation, chamber of commerce and sectorial associations were established, with the assistance of the government, in every region throughout the country about three years ago. Similarly, a number of sectorial associations were also formed pursuant to the same law.

In a bid to boost the former chamber system, the proclamation stipulates that existing chambers of commerce constitute the sectorial associations as members, thereby broadening the membership and status of the business communities they represent.

The proclamation also requires the formation of newly established chamber of commerce and associations in every region throughout the country. These regional associations, which for now should first build their own capacity, will in turn facilitate the establishment of similar associations within their jurisdiction.
