Angola: U.S. NGO Implements Malaria Fight Project

24 December 2007

Ndalatando — A project intended to fight malaria, aimed at reducing death rate in the country, is underway since December 20 this year in northern Kwanza Norte province, under the initiative of the NGO "World Vision International".

For the implementation of the one-year long project, estimated at US 500,000, the World Vision International counts on partnership of the provincial Delegation of the Angola Red Cross (CVA) and government organisations competing for the normalisation of the health situation in Kwanza Norte.

The project is part of a complement in implementing the Government strategy for the combat and treatment of malaria, said the NGO director for health in Angola, Laura Polaine.

The programme also includes upgrading of the local technicians of laboratories concerning diagnosis of the disease, assistance to distribution of medicines, as well as provision of assistance to management and control of medicine.

In his turn, the deputy governor of Kwanza Norte for organisation and technical services, Miguel Jorge Caxino, hailed the NGO initiative for joining the efforts being made by the local government in the combat of the disease which, apart from being the leading cause of local death rate, also has a negative impact on school children progress.

According to statistics, in 2006, Kwanza Norte province had recorded a total of 178,000 cases, with 498 of malaria.
