Gulu — THE Uganda Peoples Defence Force in northern Uganda are on high alert as Internally Displaced Persons celebrate Christmas today, the army announced yesterday.
The northern Uganda regional army Spokesman, Lt. Ronald Kakurungu said the army has also beefed up security at Uganda-South Sudan and DR Congo boarders incase of eventualities.
"We have increased our boarder and security alertness in northern Uganda during this festive season incase of any unforeseen circumstances," Lt. Kakurungu told Daily Monitor in Gulu yesterday.
"We know northern Uganda has not had many peaceful festive seasons and this one being different, we take it as a priority to ensure that peace prevails."
The deployments follow recent intelligence reports that the Lord Resistance Army rebels were planning to cause havoc in the war ravaged region.
Gulu RDC Walter Ochora told the media last week in Gulu that LRA leader Joseph Kony was planning to wage a fresh military offensive.
Col. Ochora said Kony had sent one of his commanders, Olula to unearth military hardware (guns and bullets) in eastern equatorial in South Sudan but was foiled by the army.
