Burundi: An Armed Iconoclast Tries to Destroy the Tabernacle of the Bishopric of Muyinga

26 December 2007

Bujumbura — An armed Muslim iconoclast in entered the church in Muyinga on Saturday 22 December and terrorized Christians who were tidying it up. He attempted to destroy the tabernacle, a portrait of the Virgin Mary and picture of Bishop who was buried in the church, but was not successful.

This incident has created such concern that the Interior minister, Mr Venant Kamana, has stepped in to calm down the situation after the Apostolic Nuncio announced that the government should carry out an investigation into the reasons behind this attack in a country where many religions are tolerated.

The chairman of the Burundian Muslim community, COMIBU, Cheik Bagoribarira, says that the iconoclast is a maniac. The iconoclast affirmed that he carried out the orders of the Almighty God, and that this had been planned for a long time.
