On 24 December Students of the University started a strike three days after the reopening of this institution. They demand their scholarships, the return of the dismissed leaders of the students' association as well as the reopening of the gates of campuses.

University authorities previously banned any student strike. The authorities of this state-owned university are struggling to find representatives of the students to negotiate with after the leaders of the students' association were dismissed.

Student registration ended last Friday. Students had downplayed the call of the chancellor of the University of Burundi to take registration until the chairman of the students' association called on them to return to their campuses.
