Burundi: New Frodebu Office Launched in Buyenzi District

26 December 2007

Bujumbura — The launch of the Frodebu party's office in Buyenzi district sounded like an electoral campaign. It was attended by high profile leaders of the party.

In his speech that followed the unveiling of this office the President of Frodebu, Hon. Léonce Ngendakumana, pointed out serious mistakes that the CNDD-FDD led government has already committed. Hon Ngendakumana stated that the imprisonment of Hussein Radjabu is politically motivated.

The inauguration of this party's office in Buyenzi is a sign that the political tension that existed between opposition and the ruling party is gradually dissipating. Previously the authorities would not allow meetings of opposition parties' members.

Buyenzi is one of the slums of Bujumbura where Muslims dominate. In the 2005 elections, the inhabitants of this district overwhelmingly voted for the ruling party, CNDD-FDD. Since the imprisonment of Hussein Radjabu, many have lost faith in the current administration. Many Muslims of this district, including religious leaders, have been demanding the release of Hussein Radjabu.
