Uganda: Hip-Hop Meets Folk At Ndere Centre

27 December 2007

Kampala — EVER wondered what a musical marriage between traditional African music and urban hip-hop would sound like? Ndere Troupe and Bataka Squad will today treat revellers to something similar. It is a show where hip-hop will meet traditional music and art.

The first fusion I watched was when Klear Kut, a local hip-hop group, teamed up with Percussion Discussion and the show was so inspiring. However, Ndere and Bataka Squad, who are bent on reviving cultures, seem to have taken this to another level.

Bataka Squad (Babaluku and Saba Saba) have just returned from the US and Canada, where they held shows to promote their music.

Dubbed Koi Koi, adapted from a Ganda traditional riddle, the show will feature riddles and poetry, among other things. Revellers will part with sh5,000 to attend the show that starts at 7:00pm at Ndere Centre. Koi Koi has been going on for one-and-half years at the centre, without any fusion.

The show will take place around a bonfire in a true traditional setting.

Saba Saba says as Bataka Squad and Ndere Troupe do their thing, they will also roast maize to create that traditional aura.

"Ndere will play drums, Adungus and other instruments and we shall fuse the sound with hip-hop to create a completely new thing," Saba Saba adds.

According to Saba Saba, the show will be more like a culture exchange.

"The dressing will also be different. We will dress in urban hip-hop gear, while Ndere will have traditional African wear," Babaluku, said.

The group will perform some of their new songs, including Kakotinge (sugar coated stuff).

Besides singing, Saba Saba, will introduce new songs such as Obwavu Kondo and Kakonsa (gossip in Ghanaian language).
