Nigeria: Looking Into the Year 2008

column

In the next few days, we will be entering the year 2008. For each of us individuals and for our nation and other groupings, it portends a lot. Many of us will be looking forward to progress and prosperity. Many will want to stop some bad habits and move forward in life. Others will like some ambitions fulfilled - personal or official. Yet, many others will look forward to retirements and fulfillment of dreams.

For our nation, Nigeria, the year 2008 will see the resolution of the electoral litigations, one way or the other, especially the presidential election judgment. Which ever way it goes, that will have direct impact on governance and policy direction. If, on the one hand, the election is nullified as is being speculated, we shall wait to see the consequences of that decision on our polity. And if, on the other hand, the election of Yar'Adua is upheld, we shall wait to see the implications of that on the polity. This is a major event for 2008 as far as Nigeria is concerned.
