Ethiopia: CBM Marks 100 Years in World, 40 in Ethiopia

Christian Blind Mission (CBM)- an international NGO working with people with disabilities and those at risk of disabilities last week marked 100 years of service to the poor and marginalized and 40 years providing similar service in Ethiopia.

As part of events and functions to commemorate global and national services, a week long photo exhibition was organized at the Hilton from 16-22 December 2007.

The Photo exhibition under the title:"From preventing of Blindness to Right-Based Approach for Person with Disabilities! 100 years of global experience and 40 years in Ethiopia!" highlights the German-based NGO's long way experience serving the needy.

CBM specifically works through partners to enable them to provide high quality preventive, curative, educational and rehabilitative services in order to maximize the quality of life an increasing proportion of people with disabilities and those at risk of disabilities.

In its forty years of action in Ethiopia where it was involved in more than 50 projects in almost all parts of Ethiopia, CBM has grown in to a highly recognized organization working to improve the lives of people with visual, hearing, physical, mental, or intellectual impairments.

According to the CBM President Professor Dr. Allen Foster on his speech said that "It is our goal in CBM, to work with partners, so that together, we can reach more people with disabilities and help improve their quality of life through medicine, surgery, education and training.

Ten Advisory Working Groups (AWG's) which constitute of experts in the mandate fields provide consultancy services to CBM and partners in the areas of Medical Eye Care (MEC), Education of Visual Impaired (EVI), Low Vision (LV), Education of Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf Blind (EDHD), prevention of Hearing Impairment (PHI), Audiology and speech Therapy (ST), Physiotherapy and Orthopedic Workshops (PON), Orthopedic Surgery(OPS), Economic Empowerment/Livelihood (EE/L) and Community Based Rehabilitation( CBR).

In 1999, CBM, together with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international organizational, launched the"Vision2020: The right to Sight," a global initiative for the elimination of avoidable blindness by the year 2020.

To accomplish this, CBM involves in infrastructure development, human resource development, and disease control with in eye medical care.

Almost a century ago the German Pastor Ernst Jakob Christoffel laid in the foundation to the global organization of today.

Currently, CBM supports over 1000 projects in more than 100 countries around the world.
