Harare — Flooded rivers have been taking their toll of people, especially children, trying to cross at normal fording points while poorly protected wells continue to add to the grim figures.
Both sets of deaths are unnecessary and preventable. Most small rivers and streams in Zimbabwe are seasonal, drying up or being reduced to trickles in the winter and summer and only coming down in flood during the rains. Even the main rivers are usually sluggish for much of the year, allowing experienced swimmers to cross or presenting frequent rapids or fords that pedestrians can scramble over.
