Nigeria: Police Kill 4 Robbery Suspects

The Enugu State Police Command said on Friday that it killed four armed robbery suspects and arrested seven others between Christmas and Boxing Day.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Michael Abattam, made this known in Enugu an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said the suspects were caught in two locations by the joint patrol team of the police and the army, following a tip-off by the residents.

Abattam said the first incident occurred at Nsukka on Christmas day, when the team engaged nine armed robbery suspects in a gun duel, in which two were killed.

He said two locally made pistols and some live ammunition were recovered from them.

Abattam said the other incident occurred on the Enugu-Abakaliki expressway at about 9 p.m., when four robbery suspects attacked a household.

The neighbours of the victims, he added, made a distress call to the joint patrol team in the area.

He said the team responded promptly and engaged the four suspects in a gun battle, in which two of them died, while two others were arrested.

Abattam said two pistols and four rounds of ammunition were also recovered from them.

He said the suspects would appear in court as soon as investigations were concluded.

In Yenagoa, the police on Friday foiled a robbery attempt to snatch a car. The Commissioner of Police, Mr Julian Okpalaeke, told NAN in Yenagoa that his men at the Ekeki Division foiled the robbery attempt on a tip off.

According to him, the suspects flee when they saw a police surveillance.
