Ethiopia: Japan Provides $1.5 Mln to Support Health Sectors

The Japanese Social Development Fund (JSDF) on Monday provided a grant amount of more than 1.5 million US Dollars(approximately equivalent to 13.8 ETB), for supporting Ethiopia' s efforts to address emergency access needs for health services in Amhara and the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' Regional State (SNNPRS).

As the grant was made as part of Japan's assistance to Ethiopian through international organizations, a tripartite agreement was signed between the Japanese embassy in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian government and the World Bank at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MoFED).

Mr. Toshlo SUGIURA, Embassy of Japan, a representative from the World Bank Ethiopia office, and Minister of MoFED Mekonenn Menyazewal.

As per the agreement, the grant will be sued for the execution of promoting emergency access to health services', which will be implemented in the two regional states Amhara and the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' Regional State (SNNPRS),The Japan Social Development Fund (JSDF) was established by the Government of Japan and the World Bank in June 2000, as an untied mechanism for providing direct assistance to the poorest and most vulnerable groups, according to a statement from the embassy. The statement said the Government of Japan had provided over 250 million US Dollars to the JSDF and almost 200 grants, amounting to more than 238 million US Dollars, had been approved, as of May 31. 2006, The Government of Japan has been assisting Ethiopia in order to improve "human security" for the people, especially women and children, and to realize a society in which people can live better lives, adding to the improvement of the ongoing development efforts of Ethiopia.
