Uganda: Kawalya Gets Rotary Award

31 December 2007

Kampala — KIWATULE Rotary Club has given Afrigo Band's soloist, Joanita Kawalya, the Vocational Award 2007.

During a function at Kabira Country Club, recently, the Rotarian for Kampala-Sese, Elieza Kaggwa, handed over the award to Kawalya, who was accompanied by her daughter, Matilda Nakayima.

"We chose her because of her consistency in music, the human element in it and for her fight against HIV," Josephat Nuwabeine, the president of Kiwatule Rotary Club, said.

"Rotarians are highly commendable people and their award is genuine and precious," Kawalya said.

Kawalya said she also got a similar award from Kampala East Rotary Club in February 2007 and two from California Rotary Club last November.

One was for being the long outstanding member of Afrigo Band and the second for the meritorious lady in Uganda.

Apart from singing, Kawalya has formed a non-governmental organisation, Masanafu Alert Concern HIV/AIDS, to cater for orphans by teaching them music and drama.
