Bujumbura — The National police imposed new measures to ensure that the festivities of the New Year will not be marred by violence. These measures include prohibiting movement of motorcycles after 20:00. Shooting in the air as sign of hailing the New Year is also banned and the police will be deployed in different localities to ensure security. During this period, no police man is allowed to go on leave.
The Christmas festivities in the city of Bujumbura were marked by a few violent incidents. In the commune of Kamenge, however, a policeman chopped off the hand of a girl. The policeman has been arrested.
The police force must improve its image after it was stained by the shocking revelations of Major Nsabimana, aka Maregos, who disclosed that top chiefs of the police were involved in the recent escalation of violence. The police have undertaken the task of eliminating any persons holding any information about their involvement in crime. Willy Nibaruta, who was arrested Rutana in connection with the aborted robbery at Gihofi seven weeks ago, was killed and buried by the police at Rukonwe in Makamba province. Major Nsabimana is currently in hiding.
