Angola: Army to Help Police Disarm Civilians

2 January 2008

Luanda — Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) will add their effort to those of the National Police in disarming civilians still in possession of military weapons.

This was announced recently in Luanda by the chief of Staff of FAA, gen. Francisco Pereira Furtado.

Speaking on the State-run "Rádio Nacional de Angola" broadcasting station, gen. Pereira Furtado defended an intense operation of armament seizure, with a view to securing tranquillity within the populations.

He said as well that the measure will reach private security staff that use weapons considered as of war.

According to the military officer, the security firms got armed with FAA organic equipment, and following five years of peace in the country, they should adjust to the moment.

He said it is high time the concerned organs of the National Police, in strict cooperation with the armed forces, restored legality in the use of firearms.
