Medical Doctors and Nurses from the United States of America are expected to perform free surgery at the Phebe Hospital and School of Nursing in Suakoko, Bong County.
Phebe Hospital and School of Nursing Medical Director Dr. Garfee T. Williams said doctors from Mt. Sinai Hospital and School of Medicine from New York City, USA, would perform general surgery, OB/GYN Surgery, Radiology, Ophthalmologist/Ocoluplastic surgeon, ENT (ear, nose and throat) and specialized surgery.
Dr. Williams said the medical operations which will start next Monday would be free.
He disclosed that apart from the Mt. Sinai Hospital and School of Medicine Mission another team of 25 doctors and nurses from Children Surgery International, formerly Operation Smile of Minnesota, would carry out Cleft Palate and Cleft Lip repair at the Hospital from January 29 to February 2.
He noted that the team would also be prepared for pediatric head and neck surgery.
Dr. Williams indicated that screening of patients would commence on January 26 and runs to the 28.
In a dispatch, Dr. Peter Melchert, a Pediatrician with Children's Surgery International said 25 doctors and nurses will arrived in Liberia to perform free surgery for children with facial deformities, which includes hole in the lip, or roof in the mouth and deformity of the nose and ear".
Dr. Melchert said they would also help with facial injuries caused by trauma or burns as well as head and neck tumors.
He noted that the medical team would start screening surgical candidates on January 26, 27, and 28 at Phebe Hospital where all surgeries will be done.
