Ghana: Akufo Addo Sets Tone for 08 Duel

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Hon. Nana Akufo Addo, over the last few days dropped hints of what the campaign of 2008 was going to look like when he described his relationship with fellow presidential aspirants- Dr. Papa Kwesi Ndoum, and Professor Fiifi Mills with whom he attended the university of Ghana, and believed, could wage a campaign without insults and lies as good comrades.

He was speaking to Ms. Gifty Anti on GTV breakfast show, a day after he had been declared winner of the 17 man race for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Also on the same television programme, Dr.Ndoum and his party Chairman, businessman Mr. Ladi Nylander appeared and gave glimpses of the broad contours of the agenda and vision of the Convention People's Party (CPP) and affirmed his long held position that his party which had now given him the mandate to lead, was going to wage a campaign free of all insults.

Accompanied by party national chairman, Mr. Peter Mac Manu, Nana Addo indicated that his party was going to get the private sector really take the commanding heights of the economy, and reiterated that mission in a subsequent television interview on Metro television's Thank God Its Friday, with Mr. Kweku Sintim Misah.

Nana Addo said the hallmark of his Government would be the expansion of frontiers of freedom. That tradition, he continued, despite all its ramifications, was going to be preserved and protected. He said that he personally knew all sixteen aspirants and hoped to deploy the array of talents that was in the party to do battle against the National Democratic Congress, representing the coup culture that had taken seed in the country and truncated Ghana's development along the comity of nations as a free democratic country in Africa.

He recalled his days at the University of Ghana when he flirted with Marxist and Leninist thinking, and the events that shaped his life. He revealed the days when as a kid he lived with his father in Korle Wokon, in central Accra, when the leadership of the United Ghana C. C. met, and the events leading to the 1948 riots.

He recalled his great uncles- Mr. J.B. Danquah, his father Mr. Edward Akufo Addo, who was to be the ceremonial president, and other leaders were deeply involved in the events that he described as 'very exciting' about the destiny of the country. His childhood was shaped around these struggles.

At the end of the day, he philosophised, the question you found yourself asking was 'in what way could you be of service to your country You are required to give something back to society .'.

He indicated that his election as a flagbearer was actually a call to serve and not to lord it over the people. He regretted the distortion in the way Ghana should have developed in her democratic path and recognised that the system of Government, which the nation had chosen, and which recognised the mode of change of leaders was through the ballot box. There was therefore the need to deepen the process of democratic reform and give more power to the people.

He said he was now sitting down with his team to map out a campaign strategy for the moths ahead.

Kweku Sintim Misa pushed him to spell out his vision for Ghana, and he was quick to comment that now that President Kufuor had stabilised the macro, by reducing interest rates and lowering inflation, his vision was to make a bold shift in the way we run the economy, where we export every thing we have - timber, mineral resources. Its time there was a shift to the development of human capital, and in the technology sector, which would be the cornerstone of the nation's enhanced economic growth.

To accelerate growth, he observed that Europeans are benefiting from the strength and positive growth curve arising from the 27-member union, which they have carved out, and the benefit of that huge market. Integration of markets such as NAFTA, ASEA, could serve as a model for Africa too. He reckoned that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah first dreamt of a united Africa, in which Ghana was uniquely placed to lead.

'Its imperative for Africa to take this project forward Nkrumah led the way', he mused, adding that Ghana can make a contribution to the development of Africa, and the integration of the continent for the benefit or welfare of its people and enhancing the quality of life of our people.

On what he did for relaxation, he told his host that he thought people should be able to laugh, and not to take everything too seriously. I like to laugh and like people who have a good sense of humour.

And on Wednesday, the NPP flagbearer rounded off a week of activity with a thanksgiving service at the Ridge church, Accra.

On his part, Dr. Paa Kwesi Ndoum capped a week of high profile politicking with several strategic meetings beginning with a visit to the Asantehene right after emerging as the flagbearer of the party, The Tema mantse, the Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Tawiah, and the television appearance with Gifty Anti and a press conference where he straightaway threw a challenge to the field for a debate.

He rounded off with a visit to his constituency, Komenda Edina Eguafo-Abirem, and a landmark public meeting with the Catholic Bishop of Cape Coast, Cardinal Turkson. With his wife, Yvonne by his side Dr. Ndoum thanked the church for their support and received equally warm thanks, claiming in the process, the support of the Catholic Church, and Christendom.

Bishop Turkson noted that this year promises to be a very exciting one, politically, and also in the area of sports and urged citizens to put up their best behaviour.

And in the meantime Nana Addo yesterday began a series of meetings with the aspirants, detailing assignments and roles for them on how they could retain power, and a news item on radio reported that Mr. Dan Botwe had been assigned the role of campaign manager, but Citi FM reported that he had denied the report and independent checks revealed that, it was not exactly right.
