Burundi: The Police Catches 10 Guns And 20 Grenades in Ruyigi

4 January 2008

Bujumbura — The police caught ten guns and 20 hand grenades in Ruyigi during a cordon-search operation that was carried out in the sole quarter of Sanzu early morning. The operation started early morning disturbing the activities of administrator, the governor and local population.

This successful cordon-search operation follows the murder of one French citizen aid worker, Agnès Burie, who was killed in the quarter Sanzu in the night of 31 December 31. This murder has led 43 nongovernmental organisations to suspend their activities for a period of 2 days in solidarity with the Action Contre la Faim for which the late Agnès Burie was working for.

The government of Burundi remembers to disarm the civil population when it is too late. The disarmament commission almost stared its activities in 2006 although the results are not palpable. The activities of this commission whose programme was to start with a voluntary disarmament were thwarted by the lack of budget.

A disarmament campaign that was launched in 2005 shortly before the election by former President Domitien Ndayizeye was thwarted by the President Nkurunziza, formerly Minister in charge of Good Governance, Privatization, State General Inspection and Local Administration, and President of the CNDD-FDD. At that time there were thousands of CNDD-FDD political mobilising combatants that their party wanted to be demobilized along with the former government's militiamen, Gardiens de la paix, but after playing a major role in the 2005 elections.

Since the accession of the CNDD_FDD on power the disarmament has become a slogan that cannot be implemented as in many cases the killing of civilians involve the police, the national intelligence services or the former CNDD-FDD combatants who have been demobilized.
