Kampala — THE alleged malpractice in the Kenyan elections was a replica of what has been transpiring in Uganda, the Forum for Democratic Change president (FDC), Col. Kizza Besigye, has said.
"The vote rigging that we have had in Uganda over the years has now been exported to Kenya. Kenya is the country that we all thought was relatively democratic. What occurred is unbelievable!" Besigye said on Sunday.
He was campaigning for the FDC candidate for the Samia-Bugwe North MP seat, Kevinah Taaka, at Madibira Primary School in Busia town.
Besigye noted that the opposition in East Africa was determined to work closely to get rid of election malpractices.
During another rally at Kayoro Secondary School in Buteba sub-county, Besigye reassured FDC supporters that victory was near, saying the NRM party was losing popularity.
"In the 1996 presidential polls, Museveni scored 75%. In 2001, he got 69% and 58% in 2006 despite the fact that he (Museveni) campaigned while I was behind bars. Statistics indicate that 'agenda' (He is going). It is just a matter of time."
He attacked the former Samia-Bugwe North MP, Aggrey Awori, for defecting to the NRM, saying the former Uganda People's Congress stalwart did not know what he wanted.
He advised the electorate in Samia-Bugwe North to emulate the people of Bugweri whom he said withstood intimidation to root out the NRM candidate, Kirunda Kivejinja.
Besigye called upon the electorate to guard Taaka's votes during the by-elections today. Taaka is facing Sarah Mwebaza (NRM), Godfrey Osenda (Democratic Party) and Nathan Wabwire (independent)
