Burundi: The Ruling Party Struggles to Find a Candidate for the Post of Mayor of Bujumbura

8 January 2008

Bujumbura — The ruling party is currently struggling to find another candidate for the post of the mayor of the city of Bujumbura after Mr. Jean-Marie Ruririmije, a native of Kamenge and a flourishing businessman, was rejected.

Though the appointment of the current cabinet, the former mayor of Bujumbura, Elias Buregure, became the vice-minister in charge of public works and equipment. The post of the mayor has remained vacant for almost two months because the head of state and his party persist in their attempts to have Jean-Marie Rurimirije appointed to this post.

The ruling party is currently short on members with sufficient experience in various domains of the country's life. The ruling party has adopted the practice of providing lucrative posts only to its major financial contributors. In the meantime, those who need official documents issued by the mayor of Bujumbura must wait until the wrangling between politicians comes to an end.
