Bujumbura

The Kenyan government reassured Burundi about its worries that the recent troubles in Kenya might have negative consequences for Burundi.

A special representative of the Kenyan President, Wilfred Mashari, was dispatched to Burundi today. Mr Mashari met the Burundi's President during his holiday today and brought a message from Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki to the people of Burundi.

Mr. Wilfred Mashari reassures Burundians that the recent troubles in the Kenya will not have any impact on the commercial relations between the two countries. He stressed that the violence is over in Kenya where more than 500 persons were killed a week ago in the wake of the presidential elections. Wilfred Mashari is the Kenyan minister in charge of the East African community.

The turmoil in Kenya has already started to affect Burundi, however. The prices of goods that are imported from Kenya, such as tinned milk and powder foam, have started to rise on the local market due to speculation.

Burundi, a landlocked country, currently imports its oil products through the northern corridor that links Burundi to the port of Mombassa. This corridor is much more important compared to the southern corridor which links Dar Es Salaam to Bujumbura via Lake Tanganyika.
