The minister in charge of industries and commerce, Mrs Euphrasie Bigirimana, says that the recent troubles in Kenya will not impact the price of oil in Burundi.

Mrs Euphrasie Bigirimana also says that no one should speculate on the price of oil because the present supply is sufficient. She, however, acknowledges that if the troubles in Kenya were to continue there would be consequences in various countries including Burundi.

More than 70&percnt of Burundi's oil passes through Kenya. Minister Bigirimana adds that if the crisis in Kenya continues, Burundi's imported products will have to be transported through Tanzania. She warns the population to be wary since some people might be tempted to sell oil back to other countries. She also demands the re-establishment of the oil fund to weather the changing price of the oil on the international market.

The Kenyan President's special envoy to Burundi yesterday reassured Burundians that the recent crisis in Kenya will not affect their country. The Kenyan junior minister in charge of the East African Community was bringing a message from his President Mwai Kibaki to his Burundi counterpart. Currently, some traders have started to speculate on the prices of some imported products such as canned milk and powder foam.

Burundi prefers to use the northern corridor which links Bujumbura to Mombassa rather than the southern corridor which links Bujumbura to Dar Es Salaam. The southern corridor, although cheaper, is in very bad condition. More than 400 kilometres in Tanzania need a very serious repair.
