Abdou Mahaman, director of Radio et Musique (R&M), an independent radio station broadcasting from Niamey, the capital of Niger was on January 8, 2008 killed in landmine explosion.
The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) correspondent reported that the incident occurred while the journalist was driving his car in Yantala, a residential area in the west of Niamey.
The correspondent said that there is no indication that the journalist was deliberately targeted. Mahaman is the third civilian to be killed in landmine explosion in Niger’s major cities in recent times.
Mahaman popularly known as Jeannot, until his death was also the Vice-President of the Board of the Niger Press Centre.
R&M is the first privately-owned radio station in Niger. It was established in April 1994.
