Luanda — The national senior women teams of handball of Angola, Algeria, Gabon and Congo Brazzaville, drawn in group A of the 18th edition of the African Handball Nations Cup 2008, left Luanda on Wednesday afternoon bound for Benguela city, to play the first stage of the tournament.
Tuesday, (8 January), the opening day of the 18th African Cup of Nations in Handball, held in Luanda, the Congolese team beat Gabon by 30-14, whereas Angola's national senior women team defeated Algeria by 42-24.
Angola and Congo Brazzaville are believed to be the favourites to qualify to the following phase in the group, thanks to the performance in the past competitions and in the last World Cup held in France, in which the Angolan ladies got the seventh place.
The 17th edition of African Handball Cup of Nations took place in Tunisia, on 10-20 January 2006, in which the host male team won the title, whereas Angola won the title through the national women team.
