Nigeria: Nurtw Chief's Murder - Suspect in Police Net

Lagos — Lagos Police yesterday said it has arrested one person in connection with the assassination of the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Saka Saula.

The suspect whose identity was not disclosed for security reasons is presently being detained at the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti Street, Yaba, Lagos.

The suspect was said to have made useful statement as to the identities of those behind the gruesome murder of Saula.

Saula was murdered in front of his house on Sunday by yet to be ascertained gunmen who stormed his Yana Ipaja home at about 10pm.

Meanwhile a yet to be ascertained number of people have since been invited for questioning by the team of detectives attached to the homicide section of SCID.

The confirmation of the arrest of one person was contrary to the claims by some members of the union that about four of their members have so far been arrested by the police since the unfortunate incident occurred.

Hell was let lose Tuesday as rampaging hoodlums popularly referred to as area boys took to the streets of Lagos to protest the assassination of the state caretaker committee. At the end about 15 shops were set on fire at the Oshodi Market.The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) who confirmed the arrest of the suspect added that some people have been invited for questioning at the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Yaba.He called on all well meaning Nigerians to shorn the romour that made the round that the police in the State had pulled its weight behind one of the factional leaders of NURTW, saying that the allegation was baseless and unfounded, and should be dismissed with the wave of the hand.
