interview
Nairobi — Finger and toenail technician and back-up singer with Eric Wainaina's Mapinduzi group.
1. What are your views on the state of he Kenyan music? Is the industry on the right path, and is it likely to get better?
We are definitely on the right track, only that we artistes need to pull up our socks.
2. You are basically a nail technician, or a manicurist; how come you are better known for your singing? Why did you switch to music and how do you balance both?
I am actually a "celebrity" when it comes to being a nail technician, and not a musician.
On the other hand, my love for music cannot be explained... it runs in the family. I decided to do both because I enjoy it, and also as a means of making ends meet.
I try to plan my calendar in order to balance both.
3. What does it feel like to work with an accomplished musician such as Eric Wainaina, and what lessons have you learnt from him?
It's an honour working with Eric; he motivates one to work even harder. Nothing comes easy.
You have to be patient to be a team player and give room for error - practice makes perfect.
4. Do you ever wish or intend to one time pursue music as a full-time career and release your own music? Do Kenyan musicians get the support they need from the Government, the media and listening public?
I have not thought about taking music full time - maybe in the near future.
The industry could use more support from the Government, the media and the public in general.
5. What advice can you give youngsters who would like to pursue music as a career, or even try their hands at your other profession as a manicurist?
To the youngsters, pick up a carrier that you love and not just for the money.
That way no matter the challenges, you will still have the energy to keep up and make a difference to the society.
