Harare — Progress Chipfumo is now standing in for Chiwoniso Maraire's Tuesday night slots at the Book Café as the mbira queen is reportedly on annual leave.
Regular patrons at the upmarket joint have welcomed the move they say had broken monotony that has been a staple at Maraire's Tuesday shows. The coming-in on board of Chipfumo - a passionate performer - has since boosted the Tuesday night concerts at Book Café as the singer's music has its own texture and appeal, patrons say. Pen Yon, the spokesperson for the Book Café, was impressed by Chipfumo's debut appearance at the venue. "He started very well. He was here on Tuesday and what a show he gave us. He was just good," she said. "Chiwoniso will be coming in February and we felt that the vacancy needed to be filled and one such person who was always in our plans was Chipfumo," she added.
It was, however, not clear as to whether the management at the Book Café would extend Chipfumo's contact. The former Hohodza lead vocalist - now fronting his own Sounds of the Motherland - has done well with his intricate guitar skills that appeal to a wider cross-section of people. The dreadlocked singer - who is doing well with his latest offering Tsiurika - recently told city.com that he would love to cater for fans at both upmarket and high-density venues.
"I have a big dream. My desire is to inspire a lot of generations and prove to them that I am gifted," he said. Some critics say indiscipline has been his biggest let-down although promoters now seem to understand him.
