Uganda: Chameleone Opens New Showbiz Chapter

Kampala — I am going to stage a historic concert. I want to do something that no one has done before." These were Jose Chameleone's words in an interview before his Katupakase concert, which was staged last weekend at Kati Kati grounds - and truth be told, he lived up to his word.

Whereas the show took a little longer to start, the crowd was kept busy with footages of Chameleone's previous concerts, which were projected on two gigantic screens. Trust the event's sole sponsors MTN in painting everywhere they go yellow - they kept interrupting the footage with their adverts, but who would complain after they reportedly gave the singer Shs141m to stage three concerts over the weekend?

A few minutes after 9p.m. Benja's Band started the show by strumming their instruments to Congolese tunes. Then northern artiste BSG Labongo a young man supported by crutches wowed the crowd with his ability to sing and dance. Henry Tigan, Lucky J who unlike his name is a kadongo Kamu artiste and Mega Dee performed but it was Juliana Kanyomozi took the audience on a roller coaster with her new hit Nkyanonya and Kibaluma. The crowd went euphoric when Chameleone finally came on stage amidst fireworks as laser special effects enveloped his white and navy blue striped suit.

A boxer accompanied him on stage punching the air as the 'Heavy Weight Champion' of music showed off his belt and golden crown.

The crowd danced, jumped, sang along as Chameleone belted out his old hits Nekolela Mali, Mama Mia, Mama Rhoda, Bawoza Nyanja, Njo Karibu, Dorotia, Kipepewo and several others off his latest album, Katupakase.

Backed by the entire Leone Crew, the dreadlocked singer said he was opening a new chapter in Ugandan music where a musician can perform for over three hours as opposed to album lauches where several musicians sing a song or two each.

The most interesting moment however, was when he invited his parents to join him on stage as he did songs of fallen musicians like Herman Basudde, Paul Kafeero, Philly Lutaaya, Elly Wamala and Lucky Dube.

Dressed in a skimpy outfit, Tanzanian musician Ray C also put on an entertaining show as Chameleone took a break backstage. Chameleone climaxed the show with his Katupakase single and proved to critics that he is still a force to reckon with in Ugandan music - a heavy weight as he likes to put it.
