Ghana: Don't Use Election to Create Confusion, Akufo Addo Advises

Ho — The flag Bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo Addo has cautioned Ghanaians not to use elections as a means to create confusion and violence in the country.

He said the four successful elections in the country had made Ghana a respected country in the eyes of the international community and commended the electorate for upholding the tenets of democracy as well as promoting rule of law over the years.

Nana Akufo Addo said this when he called on the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli traditional area, Togbe Afede XIV at his palace at Ho as part of his visit to the Volta Region to offer gratitude to Volterians and party activists for their support during his campaign.

Touching on his election as the flagbearer of the NPP, Nana Akufo Addo recounted comments by sections of the public who thought the party would be divided after the congress due to the large number of aspirants but nothing happened due to the display of political maturity and thanked NPP for the honour done him to lead the party.

The NPP flagbearer noted that President, J. A Kuffuor had laid what he called "firm foundation for economic prosperity" noting that when he becomes the president, he would continue from where President Kuffuor ended.

Nana Akufo Addo used the opportunity to assure people in Volta region that they would see more development when NPP retained power saying a lot had already been done under the Kufuor administration. He also charged party members at a special meeting with the Volta Regional executives, DCEs and MCEs as well as the over four-hundred constituency and polling station chairmen led by the Regional Chairman, Mr. Ken Wuud Nuworsu to work hard to ensure victory for the NPP in 2008.

Nana Akufo Addo pointed out that his position as the flagbearer was not only a victory for the party but for all Ghanaians because it was the will of the Almighty to ensure that he continued the sound economic policies of the NPP to make Ghanaians to enjoy development in freedom as being experienced.

Responding, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli traditional area, Togbe Afede XIV commended the NPP for the peaceful manner in which they organized the congress noting that the country needed a humble and honest leader who would inspire the citizenry, as well as instilled in them the virtues of hard work, respect for one another and love for the nation.

He observed that the ideals of good governance were undermined by greed, selfishness, nepotism and tribalism, which he noted, resulted in lack of transparency thus providing a breeding ground for suspicion. He stressed that such negative attributes contributed to the underdevelopment of the country. Togbe Afede advocated for the declaration of assets by anybody aspiring to become a president as way of fighting corruption in the country.

Another evil in the Ghanaian society Togbe pointed out, was tribalism and ethnicity adding that whenever tribalism crept into politics, it affects development and growth.

Togbe Afede noted that the circumstances that led to the relocation of the Kofi Annan International peace Centre from the original project site at Asogli to Accra still remains a mystery to the people.

Togbe Afede said peace could not be preserved unless there was a respect for one another in all spheres of life and called for a leadership that had the humility to appreciate the uniqueness of all tribes like the Ewes, Dangombas , Ashantis and the Gas.

Togbe Afede who sounded religious said poverty was not God's desire for any race and said Ghana was blessed with numerous natural resources but the people remained poor, a situation he said, called for a dynamic leader who could effectively use the resources to promote development of the people.

The presence of Nana Akufo Addo in the Ho township was celebrated as party activists and non party members rushed to cash a glimpse of him which resulted in traffic jam as taxi drivers and market women tried to see the NPP presidential candidate.

In the flag bearer's delegation were all the aspirants who lost at the congress, the Volta Regional Minister Mr. Samuel Kofi Dzamesi and his Deputy Mr. Joseph Kweku Nayan , all Volta DCES , Volta Regional Executives of the NPP and other prominent members of the party.
