Botswana: Gaborone Dam Drops, Shashe Bursts

Thato Chwaane

14 January 2008

By Friday afternoon, water levels at the Gaborone Dam had gone down from 57 to 56 percent, despite the rain in the previous few days.

According to Matida Mmipi, the Public Relations Manager at Water Utilities Corporation (WUC), this could be due to the fact that it has not been raining in the catchment areas of the dam.

The Molatedi Dam was a measly 13 percent full, Bokaa Dam 96 percent, Nnywane was at 100 percent, Letsibogo Dam was 68 percent while Shashe Dam had hit 102 percent. Mmipi says they will wait for the end of official rain season in March before charting the way forward.

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorological Services says in its Seasonal Rainfall Outlook update that there is a likelihood of normal to above normal rainfall over most parts of Botswana during the last part of the rain season, January to March, 2008.

The Met says the North East, South East, Kgatleng, eastern Kweneng and the southern part of the Central District are expected to have above normal rainfall.
