Africa: Inaugural Photo-Africa Contest On Cards

15 January 2008

Harare — THE African Film Festival of Tarifa through the Andalusian Centre of Photography in conjunction with the non-profit organisation Al Tarab will this year hold the inaugural Photo-Africa Contest and is calling for entries from African artists.

The Spain-based organisation that serves as a forum of exchange between the different cultural expressions on the African continent works with the Centre of Cultural Diffusion of the Strait Al Tarab.

It covers the arts through different events such as conferences, meetings, concerts, expositions, workshops, African film series and the African Film Festival of Tarifa.

The contest, whose deadline for entries is January 31, is meant to support and promote African photographers and establish common identities between Europe and Africa through cinema as a tool of work and communication.

All works to be submitted should relate to the African continent and participants can access the application form from www.fcat.es or email gaetano@fcat.es or sandra@fcat.org.

"The FCAT is already consolidated as a cultural forum and it focuses all its initiatives on the diffusion of the numerous artistic expressions coming from Africa, putting a special emphasis on its cinema not only as an art but also as an extraordinary tool of knowledge and co-operation," a statement from the organisers said.

It further states that with the current economic situation in the world ignoring cultural diversity, big commercial agreements tend to question the support of the governments to cultural services and products.

"This dynamics jeopardises the different forms of expression, especially those whose diffusion depends on cultural industries including, of course, the film industry while favouring artworks that enjoy the more important means of production, distribution and commercialisation, against others who do not have this privilege.

"Because of this, the African Film Festival of Tarifa supports one of the more disadvantaged cultural industries of the world: the cinematography of the African continent.

"And because we believe that the unawareness of the culture of our neighbours of the South is one of the reasons of mistrust towards the other, we keep working everyday to show that, through this exchange, between Europe and Africa there are more bridges linking us than cliffs keeping us apart," the statement said.
