Bujumbura — Two years ahead of 2010, political parties are actively preparing for the elections. An anticipated electoral campaign seems to have started. On 12 January, the youth wing of Frodebu party was restructuring its leadership in a bid to ready itself for the coming elections.
On 13 January, high profile members of Frodebu from the whole country met at their main office for the best wishes of the New Year. This meeting turned however into a debate over strategies to adopt for the coming elections.
The same restructuring is taking place in other parties as well. Gestures that also carry a message of electoral campaign are posed by the ruling party. Despite the meagre budget that was allotted to the agriculture ministry, the President of the Republic is planting fruit trees in various provinces. Over the two last weeks, he planted avocado trees in many communes of Ngozi province. These trees have been engineered in laboratory so that they can blossom within one year, enough time to impress the population. After his natal province, the head of state is to plant other fruit trees in Makebuko commune of Gitega province, a province which counts too much for its electorate as it is heavily populated. Gitega is represented by many members of the parliament compared to other provinces.
Although the move of the President of the Republic falls in an electoral campaign, it is likely to satisfy an oil processing company that is based at Murayi in Giheta commune of Gitega province. The company can process oil from avocadoes. It has not yet worked to its fullest extent. Although the extracted oil is on the domestic market with a higher price, the company is currently facing a shortage of avocadoes. This company started to process oil before it had its own plantations.
