Mr. Alan Doss, the new Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in the DRC, continues his contacts with high ranking DRC authorities. After meeting DRC president Mr. Joseph Kabila on Saturday 12 January last, Mr. Doss met Prime Minister Mr. Antoine Gizenga and Senate president Mr. Kengo Wa Dondo on Monday 14 January 2008.
At the conclusion of his meeting with the Prime Minister, Mr. Doss addressed himself to the press, where he evoked some of the points discussed during his interview with Mr. Gizenga.
During this first meeting, Mr. Doss assured Mr. Gizenga of the support of the United Nations and MONUC to the DRC and that if the mission had changed leadership, its objectives remained the same, as defined by the UN Security Council.
During their discussion, the Prime Minister and the Special Representative proceeded with a brief but wide ranging discussion of the situation in the country.
"We agreed that I will regularly meet with the Prime Minister, to report to him on what the United Nations is doing, because we are here on the invitation of the authorities and the Congolese people, to learn their opinion and hear their advice so that we can work together in a harmonious way, for the benefit of Congo and its people," Mr. Doss declared.
When questioned on the UN's and MONUC's priorities in the DRC, Mr. Doss mentioned security, the territorial integrity of the country, the protection of civilians, humanitarian intervention, the restoration of state authority throughout the country and the economic and social recovery of the DRC.
Specifying that its role was to contribute to the consolidation of peace in Congo and recognising the progress already made, in particular the elections of 2006, Mr. Doss made a point of paying homage to the "remarkable work" of his predecessor, William Swing, who was "very much appreciated by the authorities and the people of Congo, and the results show this," he said.
He stated that he wished to continue in his footsteps, to travel throughout the country, in order to see what MONUC and UN agencies, programmes and funds were doing in the DRC.
Furthermore, Mr. Doss announced his will to work with national and international partners, in order to progress towards the consolidation of peace everywhere in the country.

He also wished to be in contact with all the various components of society, as it is very important, according to him, to really hear and listen to the Congolese, and their ambitions and aspirations.
