The founder and Head of Maison Shalom in Ruyigi, Mrs Marguerite Barankitse, also known as Maggy, was summoned to appear before the general prosecutor at the court of Appeal of Gitega in order to relate to him her feelings about the killing of Agnès Bury. After a hearing that lasted two and a half hours, she said that the general prosecutor asked her, as a native of Ruyigi and an influential person in this region, what she felt after the killing of Agnès Bury, a French citizen. She answered that â-šlike every Burundians I was shocked."
Mrs Marguerite Barankitse was not aware of the reason behind her summons until today, she said jovially after the hearing. She added that the hearing took a long time because â-šI am too talkative, and I also asked questions." Mrs Barankitse said that people who have nothing to do with this killing should not be involved in investigations into it.
Mrs Barankitse Marguerite is a well-known personality. She is an activist and a defender of the rights of children who has already received an international award for her work on behalf of children. During the war that shook Burundi for more than 13 years she actively brought assistance to orphaned children. Her summons has caught the attention of the national and international communities.
Investigations into the killing of Agnès Bury are still going on. Fifteen persons have been arrested in connection with the killing. Eleven persons remain in custody in the central prison of Gitega after four people were released
