Nigeria: Maternal Death Decreases in Kebbi-UNFPA

16 January 2008

Lagos — UNITED Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) says maternal death has drastically reduced in some parts of Kebbi State.

The State UNFPA Adviser, Dr Yusuf Gusau, made this known last Sunday when he

inspected equipment and consumables donated by the Fund to Zuru General Hospital, Zuru, Kebbi State.

Yusuf, who went through the hospital's records at the maternity ward, noted that only one case of maternal death was recorded in the past three months as against an average of five deaths per month.

He attributed the sharp drop in maternal mortality in the state to UNFPA intervention in the areas of training and re-training of state and local government medical personnel.

Yusuf said that UNFPA also provided free medical equipment and consumables to the state.

"The determination of the state government to reduce the deaths of children and pregnant mothers has also contributed to the drop," he said.

The adviser announced that UNFPA had provided anti-shock garments for pregnant women for distribution to all general hospitals and comprehensive health centres in the state.

Dr Jibril Yalda, the Director of Medical Services in Kebbi State Ministry of Health, who was on the inspection team, advised medical personnel to have a change of attitude towards their patients.

He said that reports indicated that many patients were avoiding government health facilities because of the negative and disrespectful attitude of some medical staff.

Yalda warned that the government would not take it lightly with anyone caught insulting or abusing patients at the hospitals or clinics.
