Kenya: Town No-Go Zone as Mass Action Fails

17 January 2008

Nairobi — Kericho Town was a no-go zone Wednesday with many shops closed after heavy security was deployed.

Most shop owners decided not to open their premises for fear of looting.

Schools closed

Spot checks by the Nation also found only few civil servants reported for duty. Most schools were also closed.

No demonstration was witnessed but tension was high in the town.

Fuel shortage continued to bite in the district with the only petrol station with fuel selling a litre of Super at Sh100 up from Sh86.45 - an increase of 15 per cent.

The Kericho Knut branch executive officer, Mr Stanley Mutai, said he hoped the situation would improve so that learning would resume.

Not enough pupils

Speaking to the Nation in his office, Mr Mutai said most schools in area tea estates would not have enough pupils following the removal of their parents from the multinational tea companies.

In Nakuru Town, business continued normally but the police patrolled the town.

Riot police were seen at Afraha Stadium, but there was no rally or demonstration by ODM supporters.
