Kenya: 6 Killed in Second Day of ODM Protests

17 January 2008

Six people have been shot dead in the second day of clashes between the Orange Democratic Movement supporters and riot police.

One person was shot in Nairobi’s Mathare slums while five others were killed in Kisumu. All of them died from gunshot wounds.

The protests entered the second day as the ODM leadership said the party would not relent in its calls for mass action until they get justice following electoral flaws that saw President Kibaki declared winner of the December 27 presidential poll.

Several supporters have come out to join the ODM demonstrations across towns in Nyanza, Western, Rift Valley, Nairobi and Coast provinces.

Running battles between mobs and the police were witnessed in Nairobi, Kisumu, Voi, Mwatate, Narok and Eldoret.

In Nairobi, riot police lobbed tear gas at any group of people gathered in the streets after some ODM leaders, including Najib Balala, Charity Ngilu, James Orengo and Omingo Magara were seen at a city hotel along Kenyatta Avenue.

At a Press conference earlier today, ODM leader Raila Odinga said the ongoing mass action across the country would go on until the President Kibaki agrees to talks to resolve the dispute.

The ODM leader blamed the increase in the number of deaths during the unrest to the use of brutal force and live bullets on ODM supporters on trigger happy policemen.

Video footage of a riot policeman shooting at two unarmed youth in Kisumu yesterday was played to journalists at the Press conference. The youths later died.

Said Mr Odinga: “The Government and the police have turned this country into killing fields of the innocent, executing at will in unprecedented blood thirst that began long before elections took place.

PEOPLE WOULD NOT BE KILLED IF RAILA ODINGA DID NOT PROMOTE HIS KILLINGS OF SELFISHNESS AND MADNESS FOR POWER. RAILA HAD ALREADY THREATENED THAT IF HE DOES NOT WIN, HE WOULD CAUSE GENOCIDE. RAILA ODINGA IS CARRYING OUT HIS THREAT, AND THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THAT RAILA HAS CARRIED OUT ASSAULT ON THE GOVERNMENT OF KENYA. IN 1982, RAILA CAUSED A COUP THAT FINALLY FAILED, BUT SEVERAL PEOPLE WERE KILLED. RAILA IS USING FORCE TO DISRUPT THE STABLE GOVERNMENT OF KENYA, BUT HIS CONCERNS ARE JUST HIS DEADLY SELFISHNESS. My comment is in regard to the stories you have been reporting about the crisis in Kenya. You HAVE BEEN reporting unbiased and one-sided stories regarding the crisis and the government of Kenya.

I was watching news on CNN during and after the Kenyan Election for the presidency, and I noticed that the only groups of people in Kenya that CNN is reporting are about Luo and their opposition leader, Raila Odinga.

You stated that Raila Odinga was winning the elections; however, your comments towards Kibaki were extremely biased. Mr. Odinga had already threatened the government of Kenya that if he did not win, there would be genocide in Kenya. In addition, several hundreds of people from the Kikuyu Tribe had been killed by the Luo as directed by Raila Odinga. Is there a reason that you did not address this deadly problem that was literally propagated by your favourite Kenyan Tribalist and killer, Raila Odinga? Why are you supporting a man who has killed so many Kenyans of every tribe except his own the Luo?

The Kikuyu did not fight back, or avenge the hundreds of women and children who were burnt to death in some churches in Eldoret. Mr. Kibaki did not tell the Kikuyu people to go kill the Luo in light of this horrible incidence supported by CNN.

All the Killings were carried out by the Luo Tribe with the help of some Kalenjins.

CNN fails to report that, when Raila Odinga is not promoting violence in Kenya, KENYA is peaceful with the guidance of Mr. Kibaki. Kenya is usually stable and people are peace loving. The Kikuyu are peace loving and this is quite evicdent at this time, when Kenya is being BOMBARDED WITH ANTI- GOVERNMENT RHETORIC.

I am asking CNN to continue supporting their murderer, but to stop attacking Mr. Kibaki and the government of Kenya. Raila Odinga does not need CNN to surmount his murderers against select Kenyan groups.

I am asking CNN to stop being cowards and try to go to those regions that Kikuyu, Masaai, Kamba, Meru, and other tribes live and ask them for the TRUTH. BY KARARA MUHORO, American citizen

Hi Karara, First of all i read an article written by some one who has alot of hatered for a particular tribe not just a leader who happens to be from that tribe. If i would start by asking you why the hatred? what have the Luos as a people done to you? Kenya has 42 tribes right now 40 tribes are up against one tribe the Kikuyus instead of blaming the Luos, have you stopped even for one second to ask your self why the other tribes have ganged up against the Kikuyus?

Kalenjines have always killed kikuyus in rift valley over their land and the fight started long ago when Moi was still in power infact the Kikuyus in riftvalley have just been sitting on a timebomb the Kalenjines have always told them that they do not want them in rift valley. For heavens sake how dare you blame the luos for the war in rift valley. In Narok Olentimama once told the Kikuyus to vacate their land or lay low like envelopes was this also a Luo thing. Right now Kikuyus have been chased from western, coast, riftvalley, nyanza, Narok, transnzoia, are this areas all belonging to the luos Lets face it something is very wrong with this tribe and the earlier they realize that they have a problem with the other tribes the better it will be for them in Kenya.

This issue of a tribe thinking that they are more supperior than the other Kenyans and that its only them who can rule Kenya has got to stop. People are enlightened this are not those days when Kenyatta told his tribes men to steal and grab and enrich themselves so long as they were not caught.

Raila told a maltitude at Uhuru park in 2002 that Kibaki tosha and yet at that time everyone of those leaders wanted power thats why he took it apon himself and put aside his ambitions and fronted Kibaki. If he was selfish like all the rest and power hungry as you are trying to discribe him he could have not done what he did in the first place and ofcourse Moi would have continued to rule behind the back. And at that time all the Kikuyus were inlove with Raila infact they were so exited that they gave him a Kikuyu name. As soon as Kibaki got to statehouse the Mt kenya mafia took over and the Raila hero become an enemy who was now given all sorts of names. When he declared his interest in the presidency he now become a dictator and a selfish man hungry for power. When he won the election and Kibaki rigged infront of the cameras then swore himself in in ahurry performing a civilian coup it was Raila who was beigh blamed yet he was the victim here.

Come on guyz lets be honest here who is beign selfish and who is hungry for power amongst the two? Im sure if it was Raila who has done what Kibaki has done today the story would have been so different you guys would be screaming in the streets that you dont want a dictator clinging to power against the peoples wish and that you always wanned guyz that all Raila wanted was power.

Kibaki and his wealthy friends in power have been financing the Mungiki who have been chopping off peoples heads even beffor the elections where were you guys. 500 bodies of youths massacred by the police were found at ngong forest and this were not Luos but kikuyus a leader killing his own tribes men is the kind of leader you claim is just? what a shame. The order by the police of shoot to kill the citizens is nothing to joke about. We thought Moi was a dictator but Kibaki is worse than Idi Amin and he will go down in history as a president who massacred thousands of his own people and created hate among tribes in his country just because he wanted to cling to power he used the divide and rule strategy.

People like Raila Odinga will go down in history as having fought for the democratic space and introduced Multyparty in Kenya and having fought for the removal of Dictatorship gorvenence in Kenya. Long live Raila!!!! Long live Kenya!!! help kenya to achieve the 3rd and final liberation from its own coloniolists.

Hi Amorkumu. I dont know the politics in Kenya, but one thing is sure, why should a leader like Odinga who claim to be for the people allow the same people to come out for a strike when he knowns they will be killed? Why can he not sacrifice his win for the sake of the people? Supposing their is a re-election and Kibaki wins again,he will still put the poor people on the street to be killed or how? My point is if truely he is having the interest of the people at heart and not his own, he will tell them dont go out on the street for a strike because they will kill you. But even before the strike and the killing started he threated that if Kibaki riegs the election they will fight even with their lives. If truely he mean they are ready to die how many of his children so far have been killed talkless of himself? Hey Africans we have to wake up, is always not about the poor people but about the selfish desire of the politicians. For me peace can not be traded for anything not even losing an election, so anybody who tell people to go to the street is not for peace, not when he knowns they will be killed he still ask them to go. We need peace above any self made good leader.

Karara muhoro wanjiku may be an american citizen but she is still a kikuyu with kikuyu blood welling in her veins Is it any wonder that she seems to think that Kenya can only be 'guided' by Kibaki irrespective of what the majority of kenyans wish as expressed through the ballot during the just concluded presidential election of dec 27th 2007. Being a kikuyu, Karara Muhoro Wanjiku only sees Kenya and its government through the kikuyu eyes: The government of kenya must always be headed by a kikuyu. Isn't this what the 'Change the Constitution' movement of the mid 1970s was about? It was meant to forestall Daniel Arap Moi's succeeding the then ailing Kenyatta. When that failed isnt it what the 1982 failed coup attempt of 1982 was about? Raila Oding may and can have participated, but the leaders of that attempted coup was not Raila Odinga, rather some well-founded kikuyu leaders. How did 'Sir' Charlers fall, from grace? He was tried found guilty and sentenced but sunsequently pardoned. Having finally seen an opportunity to ascended to the presidency riding on the backs of Raila Odinga and co, Kibaki new that this was a godsent opportunity he couldn't miss to regain power for his kikuyu people and to never again allow it to slip away. The promised constitutional reform, and MOU that embodied it was just a means to the desired end. The 'Change the Constitution' of the mid 1970 became this time around the 'No Change in Constitution' in the service of the same interest, that is, the Kikuyu hold on power. The constitution must remain the same for continued total power in the hands of the president. Election can come but it must never be allowed to change the status quo. The ground was thus laid for the civil state coup by Kibaki and his Kikuyu cohorts that we have witnessed. So Karara Muhoro Wanjiku, lets not talk about the Selfish Raila Odinga. Wasn't it Raila Odinga's father, the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga (a Luo) who surrendered the the Prime Ministership of the post-independent Kenya to Mzee Jomo Kenyatta (a Kikuyu)? Is that what you call selfishness and madness for power? That is nationalism and patriotism of the highest order, never to be seen again in the-man-eat-man society that Mwalimu Ynerere once described kenya as. Dont defend the indefendible - the betrayal of the people of kenya by Mwai Kibaki and his cohorts lest you are one of them.

I HAVE BEEN READING YOUR COMMENTS ON KENYAN CURRENT SITUATION WITH A LOT OF INTEREST. YOU STRIKE ME AS A PERSON IN DENIAL AND YOUR ARGUMENTS SMACK OF A TRIBAL CHAUVINIST FULL OF HATE FOR OTHER TRIBES. DO YOU KNOW THAT THE LATE OGINGA ODINGA INSISTED THAT KENYA WOULD NOT BE INDEPENDENT UNLESS JOMO KENYATTA A KIKIYU WAS RELEASED? KENYATTA ENDED UP BECOMING THE PRESIDENT OF KENYA AND EVENTUALLY THANKED THE LATE OGINGA ODINGA BY PORTRAYING HIM AS A VILLAIN. DO YOU KNOW THAT RAILA OGINGA WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN HELPING KIBAKI, A KIKUYU ACCENT TO PRESIDENCY IN 2002? YET DICTATOR KIBAKI AFTER ACCEDING TO PRESIDENCY ABANDONED THE PRINCIPALS THAT HELP THRONE HIM. LIKE KENYATTA HE CONNED KENYANS. DO YOU KNOW THAT THERE ARE NO OTHER TRIBES RUNNING SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES IN CENTRAL PROVINCE OF KENYA AND YET MEMBERS OF KIKUYU TRIBES ARE ALL OVER KENYA ACCEPTED AND RUNNING SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES? ARE MEMBERS OF THE LUO TRIBE THE ONES SENDING KIKUYUS PARKING IN NAROK, MOMBASA, RIFT VALLEY AND OTHER PARTS OF KENYA. DO YOU REMEMBER 1992 CLASHES IN RIFT VALLEY PROVINCE DURING DICTATOR MOI REGIME? WERE MEMBERS OF THE LUO TRIBE RESPONSIBLE? DID RAILA ODINGA SEND LUO'S TO EVICT MEMBERS OF THE KIKUYU TRIBE IN RIFT VALLEY? YOU MAY BE READING FROM A DIFFERENT SCRIPT HOWEVER WHY ARE ALL KENYANS SENDING MEMBERS OF THE KIKUYU TRIBE PARKING? YOU CAN CONTINUE ADOPTING THE OSTRICH ATTITUDE BUT THE WRITINGS ARE ON THE WALL. KENYANS ARE ENLIGHTENED AND HAVE REFUSED TO BE CONNED. THEY ARE STANDING UP FOR THEIR RIGHTS AMIDST MASSACRE PERPETRATED UPON THEM BY THE ILLEGAL DICTATORIAL KIKUYU REGIME. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT THERE ARE LEVEL HEADED MEMBERS OF THE KIKUYU TRIBE WHO HAVE BEEN CAUGHT IN THIS MESS THE LIKES OF MAINA KIAI. DEAR FRIEND CONTINUE PEDDLING HATE AND CALLING YOURSELF AN AMERICAN CITIZEN. READERS CAN SEE THROUGH WOLFS IN SHEEP'S SKINS. MAY GOD HELP YOU SEE LIGHT.

I AM QUOTING AND AGRREEING WITH THE BELOW WRITTEN ATTICLE! TODAY I LIVE A MISERABLE LIFE ABROAD BECAUSE IN 1982 DUE TO THE SELFISHNESS OF RAILA OGINGA AND HIS CLAN I COULD NOT CONTINUE WITH THE UNIVERSITY IMEDIATELY. OUR HOME WAS BURNT AND NOW I CLEAN ABROAD BECAUSE I COULD NOT WAIT SO LONG TO JOIN UNIVERSITY. IT IS HIGH TIME PEOPLE AND THE WORLD DECIDED TO SEE THE TRUTH. RAILA IS THE POWER HUNGRY SELVICE PROUD PERSON AND HE IS USING OBAMAS NAME TO CLIMB TO FAME. SHAME ON HIM. I AM SURPRISED THAT OBAMA IS EVEN AGREEING TO BE A RELATIVE OF SUCH A PERSON. I HAVE REMOVED MYSELF FROM THE PAGE SUPPORT PAGE OF OBAMA DUE TO HIS LINK TO RAILA. SHAME SHAME SHAME RAILA. SHAME OBAMA TO SUPPORT RAILA AND SUPPORT GENOCIDE IN KENYA. WHY IS THE COMMUNIST WORLD SUPPORTING RAILA ODINGA? WHO NEEDS A SECOND HITLER... HE WAS NOT EVEN GOOD FOR EUROPE SO WHY ARE THE EUROPEANS TRYING TO GET ANOTHER HITLER!

Kenyans have had 5 years of peace and self development. Peaceful. Even the 24 years of tyranny and Mois dictatorship were far from anybodies minds. We had finally freedom and not Kiboko from Moi. Each hard working person developed themselves in all ways especially economically. Many people did further education because they could afford. The kenyan shilling was never so strong in history because the prisident was focusing on a Kenya that is strong financially. He belongs to the old school and this he has shown by concentrating on Kenyas finance. My mother has water running in the compound. There is rural electrification and best of all... properties in Nairobi have taken a 1st world development, strategy and economic power. Do you think this can be done by Rila who is only a great mouth talker, very conceited and very proud?

Ang just Because Kibaki gave the people freedome they have to oppose this?

For all of you who were promised LUNCH AT STATE HOUSE BY RAILA ODINGA when he wins and you are practically fighting for this, you are so simple and stupid minded to fight for this. How long will Raila give you lunch? When I came to compaign in Kenya with you and I heard this and I decided until Raila is dead... Kenya is not safe for the luos, for Kikuyus for no one.

I am like Wambui Otieno, RAILA where do I belong in your service tribalism nature. I am forced to flee my country even more! Kenya will be saved by the Grace of God.

All media should stop writing biased articles. Open a phone line to call in and we talk our minds. Emily Karanja Owuor

THIS ARE GREAT POINTS YOU HAVE WRITTEN. It is true in Kenya only the 26-36 year olds are supporting Raila! Worse and the campaign money has bought Pangas and all these guns being used and peope are dying of hunger. They do not know what consequences folloewed the 1982 Coup D'Etat.

In fact I wonder why Kenyan Gov allow such people to become leaders knowing their selfish malicous nature! They should be having a life time jail since he was not killed with Ochuka and co. They betrayed Kenyas and the facts that were shilded by his father are more clearer. Oginga was the main push in 1982 and his father wanted Raila to be the president but they played faul play on Ochuka, another hungry and ambitious luo who was promised Vice but wanted the whole thing!

RAILA ODINGA.. surrender and ask perdon to the Kenyan people for causing so much misery, pain and death since 1982 and stop spoiling the name of the beloved barrack OBAMA. If we relate him to a luo is already a problem BUT THAT HE IS OUR RELATIVE! HEY AMERICA WHAT IS HAPPENIGN HEAR? Killing innocent Kenyans at the expence of fame OBAMA-ODINGA? Kazungu Kibwana, Memphis.

Mr. President should show he cares for the welfare Kenyans. He's just too quiet there and giving orders to his army. He should now indulge into food distribution for the displaced as well as those poor of say Nairobi slums. And not letting the WFP do it. There is enough feed in Kenya. A man who is not hungry avoids violence. Such an action would show he cares for the welfare of all his people, however controversial his coming into this leadership is.
