Nairobi — Police shot dead another youth in Kisumu in a fresh flare up, bringing the death toll in the lakeside town to six in two days.
Bernard Ochieng was shot dead next to the Kisumu Molasses Plant, where protestors used tyres and electricity poles to light bonfires to barricade the
Kisumu-Busia highway.
Another protestor, who was shot in the leg, is fighting for his life at Port Florence Hospital.
Youth leader, Mr Joshua Nyamori, condemned the shooting and urged the police not to use live bullets to disperse protesters.
"We demand that the Police Commissioner, Maj Gen Hussein Ali, stops his men from using live bullets," Nyamori said.
Migosi Ward Councillor, Mr Paul Achayo, said peaceful demonstrations end today.
"We have restrained the demonstrators from looting or destroying property. We want to be peaceful," Achayo said.
In Nyalenda, residents cordoned off the slums after lighting bonfires on the roads. Mr Samuel Otieno, a resident, said: "We do not want police to come to Nyalenda as we hold a peaceful demo. We are tired of gunshots that rent the air every hour."
There was a huge traffic jam after protesters used boulders to block the Kisumu-Busia Road shortly after mid-day.
Police officers used private vehicles to disguise themselves. They lobbed tear gas canisters and shot in the air as protesters scampered for safety.
