Land developers encroaching into cemeteries in the Bwari Area Council have been given a one-week ultimatum to produce documents used to acquire such lands for verification or have their buildings demolished.
Chairman of the council, Honourable Isa Dara Bwari, who gave the order at the flag off of a clean-up exercise at the council's headquarters, noted that the council could no longer continue to tolerate the illegality while people do not have space to bury the dead.
Dara, who had earlier flagged off operation "keep Bwari Clean" said the last Saturday of every month had been earmarked for a compulsory-clean up exercise, pointing out that the dirty condition of the area had worsened due to the influx of people into the area two years ago.
The chairman enjoined all residents to imbibe neatness culture, adding that Bwari, as a home of tourists, must maintain its aesthetic beauty.
He disclosed that mobile courts to try defaulters had been constituted while a sanitation committee had been set up to arrest any resident, who failed to keep the environment clean.
He said the job had been given to contractors to ensure that refuge was properly disposed, stressing that any contractor who defaults in the discharge of his duty would be revoked.

It is high time that we all show a little more respect to those in their final resting places. The growing disrespect and disregard for public cemeteries is indeed very disturbing and it is good to know that the Council Chairman is standing up for what is right. JCCC Memorial parks (http://www.jcccmemorialparks.org) is a Nigerian NPO standing up for an improved state of public cemeteries. A blog has been set up to discuss this issues primarilly.
