Bujumbura — Students of the Teacher Training School, ENS, have decided to suspend their strike after their representatives met with the education minister and the staff manager at the office of the Second Vice-President of the Republic. This suspension is provisional.
The students of ENS began their strike on 7 January 2008. They demanded the entrance exam for the second cycle be cancelled of the period for which students have to serve before starting the second cycle of their studies be shortened. The education minister responded positively to their demand. He also promised that those who complete the second cycle will be treated as a student who has finished his or fifth year in the Institute for Pedagogy of the University of Burundi.
The Second Cycle for the Teacher Training School is planned to start in February. With this second cycle, this school will have the same goals as the Institute for Pedagogy of the University. At its inception this school was intended for those who had not passed the University Entrance Exam. Currently, those who pass this exam with lower marks are eligible to attend ENS, although they may not attend the University of Burundi.
Former President Buyoya issued the decree that established this institution. It might take a long time to alter the aim of ENS as it is not easy for a minister to alter a decision made by a head of state.
