Bujumbura

On 16 January 2008 at 7:30 PM two soldiers were killed during an attack targeting the home of the commander of Muha camp. The victims were soldiers guarding the commander's home in Gasenyi quarter of Gihosha commune. The attack was carried out by eight persons in police uniforms. The attacker took two guns belonging to the victims. The attack lasted for only a few minutes, but the gunshots and grenade blasts were so intense that they caused panic among the population of the northern quarters.

Another separate attack targeted the home of agent of the national intelligence services known as â-šDix tonnesâ-š in commune Kamenge. He was wounded during this attack.

Although no one has claimed responsibility for this attack, army sources indicate that it was the work of PALIPEHUTU-FNL combatants who sought to take revenge for their five comrades who were killed in clashes at Musigati.

The police were informed about this attack and many officers had been spread throughout the streets of Kamenge. The northern districts of Bujumbura are currently experiencing violence caused by the fighting between the national intelligence services and the combatants of PALIPEHUTU-FNL.
