Kenya: Kibaki Appoints Committee to Lead Crisis Talks

Patrick Wachira

19 January 2008

Nairobi — President Kibaki has appointed a high-level committee to spearhead national political dialogue and end the current crisis.

The committee is expected to represent the Government in international negotiations expected to be headed by former UN Chief, Kofi Annan.

"The committee is mandated to promote national reconciliation, international understanding and good relations on the political problems facing the country," said a PPS statement.

ODM also hinted yesterday it would pick its negotiations team for a process headed by international mediators.

The committee is headed by Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka, and comprises Internal Security minister, Prof George Saitoti, Attorney-General Amos Wako, Foreign Affairs minister, Mr Moses Wetangula and Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister, Ms Martha Karua.

Others are Finance Minister, Amos Kimunya, Local Government minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Transport minister, Chirau Mwakwere and Mbooni MP, Mr Mutula Kilonzo.

Joint secretaries for the committee are Mr Ludiko Chweya, a senior political science lecturer at the University of Nairobi and Mr Geoffrey Gichira Kibara, the Director of Legal Statistics in the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.

However, the committee is free to co-opt any other member as it deems appropriate, a dispatch from the Presidential Press Service said. The move by the President is seen as an attempt to break the deadlock that has left the country reeling from mass demonstrations, 500 deaths and 500,000 people displaced from their homes.

To all those nations and Kenyans who support Kenya and the honourable President Kibaki

The committee selected by the president of Kenya to represent them in international representations concerning the deadly leading to the Kenyan Elections and After the Elections, are excellent candidates for allowing Kenya to heal.

For more than three weeks, Kenya has been subjected to the impact of Raila Odinga's vicious and deadly intentions. Kenya has suffered tremendously and no other groups in the world have tried to intervene on the side of justice. Due to this one sided support for a murderer, Raila Odinga. Kenya has literally suffered the deadly consequencies of a mad man. Raila Odinga should be removed from wherever he is hiding and taken to a mental institution.

Kenya does not need a mad man to be its leader. Kenyans will not allow the madness of Raila Odinga to be its guiding light.

I respect your views but actually you are the one who is mad and should be taken to a mental hospital because of your insensitivity to the reality on the ground and pretence. With such attitude Kenya will never progress. C.L.Mwangi.

I am very much worried to see all what is happening in Kenya since the elections was annouced Mr Kibaki as a winner. The big question is, why did Ondinga's supporters to kill all those innocent people and their children, burning their homes and destroying their wealthy is he worthy than the dead ones? How long had he planed for this dangerous action, as it is very clear it is something he had planed since Mr Kibaki became the President of Kenya. Why is he so jerousy aout Kikuys,They are known as the hardest working people in Kenya.I am a Kikuyu and living in Germany and love my country Kenya so much. I do not understand why Raila and his supporters are acting like this, for I kow since Mr Kibaki became the President of Kenya never sided on Kikuyu side and it is well known that he was and he is the President for all Kenyans. He never even commented anything saying my Kikuyus. But he allways talk my fellow Kenyans. Well Raila says that he supported Mr Kibaki to be in for President in year 2002, what was his aim? He did not support Mr Kibaki to work with him and build a good nation for the sake of Kenyans, but he wanted to be a Prime-Minister wich did not work. And since than he was dissapointed and turned on the other side and formed his so called Orange Demokratie Movement wich he used people with a lot of lies and manipulations. Why is the world supporting a killer who does not even belongs to politics. He should be ashamed of what he have done to Kenyans, something they will never forget (a bad history for Kenyans since independent). Miss Peggy

It is disdainful of Mr. kibaki to send Mr. Kalonzo as a negociator. I negociator should nt be self interested nor vain ans superficial but a person of clout, neither should there exist an added element of having given the ipression of betraying a course for sectretly negociated positions. Mr. Kalonzo unfortunately does not have th ecredentials of a negociator.

May Almighty God and His Holy Angels come to the aid of Kenya where the blood of the poor is considerd of no value and their death moves not the leader to act. May the selfish and greedy hearts be softended by God and may the proud be banished by His Angels to the place that they deserve by their actions. May honesty and respect for others thrive and may truth again be considered a value to be treasured by those who have responsibility. May those who betray for money rot in their money and those who kill by the bullet receive their due punishment from the Almighty.
