Kenya: Kibaki Appoints Committee to Lead Crisis Talks

Patrick Wachira

19 January 2008

Nairobi — President Kibaki has appointed a high-level committee to spearhead national political dialogue and end the current crisis.

The committee is expected to represent the Government in international negotiations expected to be headed by former UN Chief, Kofi Annan.

"The committee is mandated to promote national reconciliation, international understanding and good relations on the political problems facing the country," said a PPS statement.

ODM also hinted yesterday it would pick its negotiations team for a process headed by international mediators.

The committee is headed by Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka, and comprises Internal Security minister, Prof George Saitoti, Attorney-General Amos Wako, Foreign Affairs minister, Mr Moses Wetangula and Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister, Ms Martha Karua.

Others are Finance Minister, Amos Kimunya, Local Government minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Transport minister, Chirau Mwakwere and Mbooni MP, Mr Mutula Kilonzo.

Joint secretaries for the committee are Mr Ludiko Chweya, a senior political science lecturer at the University of Nairobi and Mr Geoffrey Gichira Kibara, the Director of Legal Statistics in the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.

However, the committee is free to co-opt any other member as it deems appropriate, a dispatch from the Presidential Press Service said. The move by the President is seen as an attempt to break the deadlock that has left the country reeling from mass demonstrations, 500 deaths and 500,000 people displaced from their homes.

To all those nations and Kenyans who support Kenya and the honourable President Kibaki

The committee selected by the president of Kenya to represent them in international representations concerning the deadly leading to the Kenyan Elections and After the Elections, are excellent candidates for allowing Kenya to heal.

For more than three weeks, Kenya has been subjected to the impact of Raila Odinga's vicious and deadly intentions. Kenya has suffered tremendously and no other groups in the world have tried to intervene on the side of justice. Due to this one sided support for a murderer, Raila Odinga… [Read Full Text]

Why is he so jerousy aout Kikuys,They are known as the hardest working people in Kenya.I am a… [Read Full Text]

It is disdainful of Mr. kibaki to send Mr. Kalonzo as a negociator. I negociator should nt be self interested nor vain ans superficial but a person of clout, neither should there exist an added element of having given the ipression of betraying a course for sectretly negociated positions. Mr. Kalonzo unfortunately does not have th ecredentials of a negociator.

May Almighty God and His Holy Angels come to the aid of Kenya where the blood of the poor is considerd of no value and their death moves not the leader to act. May the selfish and greedy hearts be softended by God and may the proud be banished by His Angels to the place that they deserve by their actions. May honesty and respect for others thrive and may truth again be considered a value to be treasured by those who have responsibility. May those who betray for money rot in their money and those who kill by the… [Read Full Text]
