Kenya: Nomination - ODM-K Criticises Maanzo

Nairobi — ODM-Kenya's decision-making organs have criticised party chairman, Mr Daniel Maanzo, for forwarding his name for nomination to Parliament.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Election Board told Maanzo to respect their decisions.

There are five candidates fighting for the party's two nomination slots.

NEC member, Dr Julia Ojiambo, and Mr Abubakar Ahmed, who sits in the elections board, said it was wrong for Maanzo to discuss party issues in the media.

"Maanzo should respect the party which he purports to chair. He should wait for the final decision to be made," said Ojiambo.

Ojiambo and Ahmed, who are also eyeing nomination to Parliament, said NEC would pick the names by next week.

NEC Chairman, Information minister, Mr Samuel Poghisio, is expected to forward the names of the nominees to the Electoral Commission.

Ojiambo said although she was one of the applicants, she would accept the top organs' verdict. Ahmed said one nomination slot should go to Coast or North Eastern provinces.

He said losers in last month's election should not be considered.

He said the decision the NEC makes would determine the party's future in some regions.
