Nairobi — The number of Displaced people in the North Rift region has shot up to 116,000 people, says the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS).

The KRCS North-Rift Regional Manager, Mr Abdi Noor, said updated data showed that the post-election violence had claimed 140 lives in the region.

He said there had been 37 camps of displaced victims but the number had been gone down because some victims had moved.

The camps, he said, were spread in Uasin Gishu, Trans-Nzoia, North Nandi and South Nandi districts.

In Eldoret, camps that had been established at the Eldoret Police Station and the Catholic Cathedral have been cleared and victims moved to the Eldoret Showground.

"We have so far distributed 1,190 metric tonnes of relief food to the affected people," said Abdi.

He added: "We have plans to introduce a one-month ration of supply jointly with the KRCS, the World Food Programme and the Government through the Ministry of Special Programmes."

He said the new one-month ration programme would kick-off from early next month.
