The Chinese Minister of Science and Technology, Wan Gang, on Monday visited the sites where the Centre for Agricultural Research and Technology Transfer at Umbeluzi, and the Moamba Technology Park will be built, both of them in Maputo province.
This was the second and final day of Wan's visit to the country, which is intended to boost relations of cooperation in scientific areas, and contribute to agricultural development and technological innovation.
According to Wan's counterpart, the Mozambican Minister of Science and Technology, Venancio Massingue, the two projects are undertakings that will bring added value not only to the area of science and technology but to other areas where development depends on constant technological innovation.
"These are large scale projects which will be added to the great potential Mozambique already possesses in natural and even human resources", said Massingue. "We live in a society increasingly oriented towards innovation. Technological incubators are a priority for our programme of training young people to implement the government's National Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy".
The Chinese minister pledged that, just as China had assisted Mozambique in the fight against colonialism, so it would help in the struggle "against hunger. We shall continue to provide assistance, transmitting our experience of more than 30 years of opening to the world and to technological development".
To implement these projects, a Chinese technical team visited Maputo province in June 2007, assessing the viability of building the Agricultural Centre and the Technology Park. A second team has been working since 5 January, looking at the soil quality and the water table.
Work on the Agricultural Research Centre should begin by April. 55 hectares has been made available for the Centre at the Umbeluzi Agricultural Station. The premises will contain space for various crops, pasture for livestock and ponds for fish farming, as well as specialist laboratories.

As for the Moamba Technology Park, 365 hectares are available, and construction should start in the second half of this year. The park envisages hi-tech industries, as well as commercial and residential areas, and the premises can be rented to private companies.
Moamba was chosen for the technology park, because this district is part of the Maputo Development Corridor, lying on the main road from South Africa to the port of Maputo.
Further details on the two projects will be included in an agreement to be signed between Wan and Massingue before the Chinese minister ends his visit.
